Shall We Marry?

July of 1998
I came up with a novel idea that actually started out as kind of a joke.? When
I interview actresses prior to shooting a video I often joke around with them
a little, asking them if they want to get married, and if so, would they like
to do it on video.?I found a girl that actually seemed to be willing, so I decided
to make a video about a bachelor who marries a professional adult video actress.?
I proposed the idea to V&R Adult Video Productions.? I had my doubts about
whether or not the project would go ahead but to my surprise, V&R agreed
to produce the movie.?When the time came to start production on the movie, the
actress disappeared.? This was the first sign that the project was going to
be a difficult one.?
In Autumn
Production was halted until a few months later.? I was interviewing another
actress when it suddenly occurred to me that she might be perfect for the part.?
That AV actress was Rei Asagiri, who has a club in Hiroshima and thought the
video would be good publicity.? My goals were more aesthetic: I wanted to capture
on film a newly married couple cherishing their love.
At that time I began to wonder if I could really pull the project off.? After
all, would she be able to find a marriage partner that she could really love?
I worried that all the candidates might be lecherous perverts.? Another stumbling
block could be the families.? They might object to a wedding for the purpose
of an adult video.?I knew this wasn't going to be easy, but I tried anyway.
I placed notices about the proposed marriage in magazines and newspapers.

January13th,1999
The day arrived when we had our final list of eligible bachelors.? There were
over 70 applicants from all over Japan.?Since we weren't interviewing professional
AV actors, the guys who did apply tried to make themselves look as good as possible.?Many
of them brought bankbooks or asset certificates to prove how financially secure
they were.?One guy even brought a bar of gold!? Rei finally chose a 27-year-old
electrical engineer.
February 8th, Rei met the lucky bachelor.?After initial meeting, they spoke
on the telephone and had a dates. After that Rei had a change of heart.?She
felt that her choice wasn't a very reliable guy.? We had to find another guy
for her as a consolation match.
At the exact time we were shooting an interview with Rei, and without any prior
knowledge, her modeling agency was raided by the police. These agencies are
often raided to teach them a lesson, and to send a warning to other such agencies,
Because these agencies are often involved in prostitution, and underground video
production, ( porno videos in Japan must be censored), the manager and other
staff were arrested and taken into custody and the agency was closed down.?
Rei didn't know about it until she went home, and was quite shocked. ??

In March
Then a personal tragedy forced me to focus on the events in my private: my father
passed away.? The day?after my father's funeral, I met Rei again to discuss
the project.?She dropped a bombshell on me. "I want to drop out of this
project" she said very seriously. "I have someone special in my life
now" she explained.
It seems that she had fallen in love with the manager of her modeling agency.?
He had been proposing to her for some time and had actually applied to marry
her in the video.? Both she and I had refused, but after the police raid, they
had become much closer.?
He came to see me with her and said, "I'll pay the cancellation charges
for the production.? I'll do anything." I said that I would honor their
wedding, and that we could go ahead with the shooting with him instead of the
original candidate.? But she said that she couldn't make love in front of a
camera.?I proposed taping their honeymoon but she rejected the idea saying that
she didn't want to mix her career with her private life.
Shortly after this Rei became depressed, and mentally unstable. The manager
of the modeling agency blamed me and threatened to sue.? He said that I had
made her go mad and although he would pay for the cancellation charges, he would
sue for a lot more in damages.
I had to find another AV actress or wait for Rei to change her mind.? Production
ground to a halt.
April 5th
Rei tried to commit suicide by slashing her wrists in her bathroom.?She felt
guilty about discontinuing the shoot.?Her father, apparently upset over the
situation, even tried to commit suicide by jumping off a building, and may be
paralyzed on his side.
In June
I had lost all patience with and tried to revive the project by myself.?I told
to the manager, "Rei doesn't have to be in the shoot.?I want YOU to perform
with another actress!? If you do that, you won't have to pay the cancellation
fees"
He replied, "I cannot do that.?If I have sex with another woman, especially
for a job, she'll leave me" Production remained stopped.
In the meantime, Rei had become pregnant and miscarried the child.
August 31th
She recovered in a few months and came to see me.
"The miscarriage was your fault!" she said.?
"What?!" I said.
"You pressured my husband to perform for you and the stress you caused
us complicated my pregnancy.?I won't cooperate with you anymore!"
I felt she was the one who broke a promise.? She had brought all of this on
herself.?I tried to remain calm.? I pulled myself together and apologized.?I
tried again.
"I would like to shoot your wedding party scene" I said.
I've found her to calm down and be reasonable before. She compromised.
"Though I cannot do a sex scene, I will consent to shooting the wedding
party"
She again promised to co-operate.
In September
Production resumed.? As we couldn't get an actual marriage with Rei, I began
looking for another AV actress.? I finally found Eri Amuro, a 45-year-old veteran
prostitute.? She was willing to have a registered marriage for the production.
We went through the whole process of selecting eligible bachelors again and
surprisingly she chose the same 27-year-old electrical engineer that Rei had
previously chosen.? He seemed to really like her and she thought that he was
okay.? I suggested that we go to a hotel and film their first sex scene.? But,
up until this time he was still a virgin, he had sex for the first time on video.
Following this, Eri Amuro and the bachelor had several dates, even going to
Guam Island together and seemed to be getting on pretty well. The goal for me
was to have a double wedding party shoot. My luck didn't last, however.?
That autumn
The bachelor approached me and said he couldn't marry Eri.? The reason?? Eri
has a child in junior high school and it bothered him.? I sympathized with him
but I needed to shoot this film.?I implored him, "You don't actually need
to register the marriage.? Just let me shoot your wedding party please"
January 5th, 2000
We visit a church for meeting of a double wedding party. The shoot seemed finally
about to happen. Rei complained about the idea for the shoot.? She didn't want
to have a party with the other couple, her reasoning being that the other marriage
was to be a bogus wedding, with no parents or guests attending for the other
couple, and she thought that it would cheapen her wedding.
January 8th
I shot the film with only one couple.? Their parents even attended the shoot.
And like that, 3 years of failure ended.
